Stratocaster / Three-knob 'Volume-Tone-Tone' Wiring Diagrams

Back

Volume-Tone-Tone models / Installation instructions and diagram for Fender Stratocaster & similar guitars - OPTION A - 2.08MB For guitars with three pickups, lever selector switch, one master volume, and two tones (Stratocaster-style)

Option A: Master ToneStyler - Master Tone Pot
Page one shows the original Fender Strat wiring; page two shows one tone pot replaced with one master ToneStyler, and the other tone pot re-wired as a master tone pot. Open the PDF in full-page view, and use your mouse wheel or page buttons to "flip" back and forth to compare the easy "before" and "after" wiring. For optimal performance, replace the standard tone pot with a Fender or CTS 250kΩ "no-load" tone pot.

Volume-Tone-Tone models / Installation instructions and diagram for Fender Stratocaster & similar guitars - OPTION B - 2.17MB For guitars with three pickups, lever selector switch, one master volume, and two tones (Stratocaster-style)

Option B: Master ToneStyler - Master Tone Depth
Page one shows the original Fender Strat wiring; page two shows one tone pot replaced with one master ToneStyler, and the other tone pot re-wired in series with the ToneStyler as a master "tone depth pot". Open the PDF in full-page view, and use your mouse wheel or page buttons to "flip" back and forth to compare the easy "before" and "after" wiring.

Select the pickup's maximum resonance and roll-off frequency using the ToneStyler, then adjust the intensity and treble component of the circuit using your "tone depth knob". Very useful for direct recording on a DAW.

Re-use your original full-range 250kΩ audio-taper pot to create a "Mega Tone Pot"... now with instantly-selectable tone caps and adjustable frequencies. Note that full-clockwise rotation of a standard value tone pot will bypass all ToneStyler settings, and intermediate knob settings will also serve to bypass the upper frequency EQ selections; to hear all of the available EQ positions, remember to set this series "tone depth pot" counter-clockwise as needed. For ease of use in live performance, install a lower-resistance 25kΩ audio-taper pot, which provides a more subtle "lead/rhythm" variation; the reduced treble range prevents inadvertent bypass of the ToneStyler due to bright tone settings.
